Summer is the busiest time to move. Here is how to book well, keep cool and look after your belongings when it is hot.

  • Summer is peak season, so book your survey and date as soon as you have one.

  • Start early, so the heaviest work is done before the afternoon heat.

  • Keep cold water available for everyone.

  • Keep heat sensitive items such as vinyl records, candles and some electronics somewhere cool.

Book early

Summer is peak season. One removals firm says August alone accounts for about 12 percent of UK moves, and suggests booking 8 to 12 weeks ahead. In London it is sensible to book your survey and date as soon as you have one, especially if you want a particular weekday.

Good to know: One removals firm says August alone accounts for about 12 percent of UK moves, and suggests booking 8 to 12 weeks ahead.

Start early

We arrive in a 30 minute window, usually from 8am. In hot weather an early start helps, because the heaviest work is done before the afternoon heat. If you are doing your own packing, finish it before the day, not during it.

Keep the crew and yourself drinking

Have cold water available for everyone. Someone who is properly hydrated works better and safer, and so does the team.

Heat sensitive belongings

Some things do not like warmth. Vinyl records, candles, some electronics and anything with wax or chocolate are best kept somewhere cool, or with you in the car. Do not seal heat sensitive items tightly in a closed box that will sit in a warm van. Move plants in the shade where you can and give them water beforehand.

Plan for the light

Long evenings give you time to start unpacking and set up the bed and kettle before dark. It also means you can see what you are doing while the team finishes.

Parking in the summer

Streets are busy at weekends, with events, markets and visitors. Reserving space outside is worth doing, as set out in our Parking and Access guide.

Kids and pets

School holidays are good for families, but a busy house with children is a lot to manage. Read our post on moving with children and pets for ideas.
