Moving day is a lot for the people and animals who live in the house. A few simple plans keep everyone calm, safe and out from underfoot.

  • Talk to children early, and let them pack a special box of their own things.

  • Arrange somewhere safe for children and pets on moving day, away from open doors.

  • Tell the team about any pets or small children when they arrive.

  • Set up children's bedrooms first, and bring familiar things.

Before the day

  • Talk to children early. Have an age appropriate conversation about what is happening and listen to any worries. Letting them pack a special box of their own things gives them some control and something to look forward to.

  • Introduce boxes gradually. Boxes appearing slowly around the house is less of a shock than everything being packed overnight, for children and pets alike.

  • Keep routines going. Meals, walks and bedtimes matter more than usual in the weeks before a move.

  • Update pet details. Check that microchip records and ID tags carry current contact details, in case an animal slips out during the day.

On moving day

Arrange somewhere safe for children and pets, away from the doors and out from underfoot. A busy house with doors open and heavy items moving through it is not a safe place for either. Many families choose to have children and pets with a relative, a friend or a pet care service for the day.

If they need to stay at home, set aside one quiet room, with the door closed and a note on it, and put their bed, toys and water inside. Keep it off the list of rooms to be emptied until the end, or tell the team in advance so it is left alone.

Tell the team about any pets or small children when they arrive, so doors are kept shut and everyone knows where they are. Keep your phone on, and agree who is responsible for each child and pet.

On the journey

Plan the journey like any other trip. Carry pets in a secure carrier, and keep a bag of essentials within reach: snacks, water, toys, medication and anything that comforts them. Music or a favourite playlist can help children settle during the drive.

Settling in

  • Do their rooms first. Getting children's bedrooms set up early gives them a familiar place to settle.

  • Bring familiar things. Keep favourite toys and bedding accessible, and avoid buying new pet beds or blankets straight away, because familiar items are comforting.

  • Introduce pets gradually. Let them explore one room at a time, and keep them contained to begin with.

  • Get back to routine. Consistency helps children and pets feel secure. Explore the neighbourhood together, and be patient. Adjusting takes time for everyone.
