If you are moving in or around SW19 in late June or July, the Championships change the roads and the parking. Here is what to know and how to plan.

  • The Championships run for two weeks in late June and July, and the dates change each year.

  • Merton Council publishes the road access restrictions, so check the current year's page.

  • Parking rules also change in Merton and in Southfields, which is covered by Wandsworth.

  • If you can, move on either side of the fortnight.

When it happens

The Championships take place over two weeks in late June and July. The exact dates change each year, so check them before you fix your moving date. If you have any flexibility, the simplest solution is to move on either side of the fortnight.

Road access restrictions

Merton Council publishes the access restrictions that apply during the Championships. A number of roads near the club, including Church Road, Somerset Road, Bathgate Road and Marryat Road, are closed to motor vehicles during the day, from 8.30am to 11.30pm according to the council. Always check the council's page for the full list and for the current year's details.

There are exemptions. Emergency vehicles are always allowed, and depending on the road, so are residents with permits, care workers, taxis and delivery vehicles. These vary from road to road, so do not assume a van will be treated the same way everywhere. Merton also notes that a bus route is diverted during the event.

Parking is tighter too

Parking rules change as well. Merton publishes separate parking restrictions for the fortnight, and Wandsworth Council makes parking changes in Southfields during the Championships. If your move is in either area, look at your council's current page well before the date, because the rules affect where the van can stop and whether a bay suspension is practical.

Worth checking: Whether a closure affects you depends on your street, so confirm it with the council, not just with us.

How to plan your move

  • Choose your date with care. If you can, avoid the fortnight altogether.

  • Tell us at your survey. Tell us if your move falls in or near the Championships, so we can plan access and timing around it.

  • Apply early for parking. If you need a bay suspension, apply as soon as you have a date. Our Parking and Access guide explains how it works.

  • Allow extra time. Traffic on surrounding roads is slower during the event, so build slack into your day.

  • Check your own road. Whether a closure affects you depends on your street, so confirm it with the council, not just with us.

How we plan around it

We plan around the road closures near the club during the fortnight, so your move date is not caught out by local traffic restrictions. If you are moving in Wimbledon or Southfields, see our pages for Wimbledon and Southfields.
