Why parking matters
In much of London, residential streets are controlled, and a large vehicle cannot simply wait outside for hours. A parking bay suspension reserves the space outside your property for the day of your move. Without one, the van may have nowhere legal to stop close to your door, which slows the day down and can put you at risk of fines.
How bay suspensions work
You apply to your local council, usually online. Each council has its own process, so check its page for the current requirements. You will normally need:
Your name and contact details
The street and the exact location of the bay
The date or dates of your move
The reason for the suspension
Notice periods vary between councils, from a few working days to a couple of weeks, so apply as soon as you know your moving date. Once approved, the council puts up signs before the day to show the bay is suspended.
We are happy to advise on parking at your survey, and can arrange suspensions with local councils on your behalf where needed.
Charges that are not in our guide prices
Our guide prices do not include parking charges, the Congestion Charge or ULEZ where applicable. Council fees for suspensions vary widely between boroughs, so we do not quote them here. Check your council's page for the current figure, and factor it into your budget.
Council parking suspension pages
Find your council below. These pages are run by the councils themselves and show current costs and notice periods.
If your council is not listed, search for its "parking bay suspension" page.
Access at both ends of the move
Flats and apartment blocks: check whether your building requires a booked lift, a loading bay or set moving hours, and confirm this well in advance.
Narrow streets and one way systems: tell us at your survey, as it can affect the size of vehicle we send.
Stairs and tight turns: large furniture sometimes needs a plan. Mention anything bulky so we can assess it beforehand.
Shared driveways and private roads: let your neighbours know a van will be arriving.
