Start early and use the daylight
Winter days are short, and loading in the dark on wet pavements is harder and slower. Aim for the earliest slot you can. Our arrival window is usually from 8am, and an early start gives the team the best of the daylight.
Keep an eye on the forecast
Check the forecast in the days before, and again on the evening before. Rain, ice or snow will not usually cancel a move, but knowing what to expect lets you plan for it, and lets us talk through any changes with you early.
Protect floors and belongings
Wet weather means wet boots and wet boxes. Floor protection should go down where the team will be walking, and furniture and boxes should be covered while they are carried between the property and the van. Our team protects floors, doorways and stairwells as part of every move, and you can read more in our guide to Protecting Your Property.
Sort the heating before you arrive
Nobody wants to unpack in a freezing house. Contact the utility suppliers before moving day to make sure the heating and hot water will work when you arrive, and ask the previous occupants whether the heating can be left on low, which also helps prevent pipes freezing.
Keep sensitive things with you
Some items do not like the cold or the damp. Consider carrying sensitive electronics, houseplants and sentimental belongings in your own car, packed last, rather than sending them on the van.
Tip: Carry sensitive electronics, houseplants and sentimental belongings in your own car, packed last, rather than sending them on the van.
Allow extra time
Slower traffic, road closures and the odd delay are more likely in winter. Build some slack into your day, and avoid scheduling anything tight straight after the move. If your day involves a solicitor or a handover of keys, plan for the possibility of running late.
Do the London basics early
Winter does not change the need for a parking bay suspension, so apply as soon as you have a date. If you live in a flat, check the lift and loading bay rules with your building. Our Parking and Access guide covers how it works.
Pack a winter essentials box
Keep it with you and include a kettle, tea and mugs, toiletries, chargers and a change of clothes, plus an extra warm layer for everyone in the house, in case the heating is slow to come on.
