Insurance is worth understanding before moving day, not after. We talk it through as part of your quote, so there are no surprises.

Insurance is worth understanding before moving day, not after. We talk it through as part of your quote, so there are no surprises.

How we handle it

We will talk you through your insurance options as part of your quote, so you know exactly what is covered before moving day.

Check your home contents policy

Some policies cover belongings while they are in transit, some do not, and some limit cover for high value items. Contact your insurer and ask whether items in a removals van count as covered, and whether valuable items need to be declared separately.

Questions to ask any mover about cover

  • What is covered, and what is excluded?

  • What is the most they will pay per item, and in total?

  • How does packing your own boxes affect cover?

  • How are valuable items treated?

  • How do you make a claim, and how long does it take?

  • Can you see the policy document or certificate?

Read the exclusions carefully. Pre-existing damage, items packed by you, pairs and sets, and high value goods are common areas where cover is limited.

Make a list of valuables

Photograph valuable items and note their condition, with a rough value for each. For anything of particular value, a written record makes any later conversation simpler.

Tell us about high value items early

Specialist items may need different handling and different cover arrangements, so mention them at your survey, not on the day.

Check for a trade body

It is reasonable to ask whether a removals company belongs to a trade body, such as the British Association of Removers, and what that means for dispute resolution if something goes wrong.

The jargon, in plain English

  • Goods in transit cover: protects your belongings while they are in the removals company's care.

  • Limited liability: the company's responsibility is capped, for example at a set amount per item, whatever the item is worth.

  • Declared value: the value you state for your belongings, which can set how much cover applies.

  • Exclusions: things the cover does not pay for.

If you are unsure what level of cover suits your move, ask us. We would rather explain it clearly than leave you guessing.
