A survey is how a removals company turns your move into an accurate quote. Here is what happens, the ways it can be done, and what to show the surveyor.

  • A survey turns an estimate into a quote based on your actual move, and you should not be charged for one.

  • It can be done in person, on a video call or from a walkthrough video you record yourself.

  • Show the surveyor everything, including the loft, garage and shed.

  • Compare quotes line by line, so you are comparing like with like.

Why a survey matters

Without a survey, a quote is an estimate. Estimates rely on guesses about how much you are moving, how easy it is to reach your door and how long the packing will take, and that is where surprises come from. A survey lets the company see all of it, so the price reflects your move. You should not be charged for one.

Three ways to do it

At B Moved we can survey in person, by video call, or from a walkthrough video you record yourself and send over.

  • In person: someone visits, walks through each room and notes what is moving. It suits large or complicated properties.

  • Video call: a surveyor guides you round the property live. Removals firms that offer video surveys generally say they are as accurate as a visit for most homes, and typically take around half an hour to 45 minutes.

  • Walkthrough video: you film each room at a time that suits you and send it across. It is useful when diaries do not line up.

What the surveyor looks at

  • How much furniture there is, and which pieces need dismantling

  • Large, heavy, fragile or valuable items

  • Storage spaces such as the loft, garage and shed

  • Access at both ends, including stairs, lifts, narrow streets and where the van can stop

  • How much packing is needed, and who is doing it

What to show them

Open the cupboards, the loft and the garage, and do not tidy anything away. Point out what is not moving, anything awkward to carry, and any item you are worried about. If your dates might change, say so. If you are thinking about storage, mention it now, so it can be built into the quote.

Tip: Open the cupboards, the loft and the garage, and do not tidy anything away.

Questions worth asking

  • What does the quote include, and what does it leave out?

  • Are parking charges, the Congestion Charge or ULEZ included? Our guide prices do not include them.

  • How does packing some or all of it yourself change the price?

  • How long is the quote valid for?

After the survey

You should get a written quote that clearly lists what is included. Read it properly before you accept it, and ask about anything that is unclear. If you are comparing several firms, make sure each quote covers the same things, so you are comparing like with like.
